Disc bulges
Disc bulging occurs when the protrusion is contained within the disc. This is why it is also called a subligamentous hernia or contained hernia. The disc envelope remains intact, but the bulging of the hernia beneath the surface can cause stress on the nerve roots.
Significant intradiscal pressure can cause the circumference of the disc to vary, creating a deformation (bulging). Even if the nucleus pulposus and annulus remain intact during disc bulging, the pressure exerted on the surrounding tissues (blood vessels, nerves, ligaments) can cause pain similar to or even worse than that of a herniated disc.
