Facet syndrome

Facet syndrome

The facet joints are structures located at the back of the vertebrae. They allow the spine to move at specific anatomical angles. Each vertebra has four facet joints: two to articulate with the vertebra above and two to articulate with the vertebra below. These facets are covered with very smooth, soft cartilage that is constantly lubricated, allowing the vertebrae to slide freely during movement.

Facet syndrome is the inflammation of one or more facet joints in your back. It is a common condition that is often confused with a ligament sprain. The facet joints form the posterior part of the vertebrae. They guide the movement of the vertebrae and are not designed to bear weight like the vertebral bodies and discs.

Facet syndrome: The facet joints bear the burden of diseased discs!

Thinning of the discs for any reason increases the load on the facet joints. Over time, this leads to degenerative changes, pain, and loss of mobility.

The pain is caused by deterioration of the cartilage in the facet joints and the ligaments surrounding them. This deterioration usually occurs as a result of a poorly treated sprain, abnormal movements, or stiffness in the back.

Symptoms :

  • Stiffness upon waking up
  • Discomfort when lying on your stomach
  • Increased pain when stretching backward
  • Difficult and painful pelvic rotation
  • Need to keep your back forward when standing
  • Need to round your back for relief while walking
  • Feeling of weakness in the back
  • Difficulty or inability to run
