Sciatica is characterized by persistent pain along the sciatic nerve, i.e., along the outer side of the leg.
Most often, sciatica is caused by compression of the nerve roots that branch off from the spine, caused by a herniated disc.
The pain usually begins with lumbago (lower back pain) and gradually worsens. The pain gets worse when the person coughs or stands or sits for long periods of time. This pain can even prevent the person from lying down and sleeping. Symptoms depend on the area affected.
If it is the fifth lumbar root or L5, the pain affects:
- the back of the thigh
- the back of the foot
- the big toe
If it is the first sacral root or S1, the pain affects:
- the calf
- the heel
- the sole and outer edge of the foot
If it is both the L5 and S1 nerve roots simultaneously:
- the pain extends from the buttock to the foot, encompassing all the other areas described above.
